Even though you can't see them, thousands of different bacteria are crawling all around you. Of course, they are teeming in places like dirty floors and unclean bathrooms. But, did you also know that there are an average of 7000 different types of bacteria in dust alone?

In 2015, a study done by the University of Colorado at Boulder revealed the truth about how dirty dust really is. By analyzing 1200 homes in the United States, they were able to find a total of 125,000 different microorganisms among the collected dust particles.

The type of bacteria found in homes varied due to a number of different reasons, including who was living the home. Additionally, varying skin compositions as well as hygiene patterns further contribute to the probability of dust-borne bacteria. Another huge catalyst for the type of bacteria found in the homes was having pets, such as cats or dogs.

Bacteria weren't the only tiny creatures living in the dust, however. Large amounts of fungi were also present, with the average home having about 2000 different varieties. Unlike bacteria, however, fungi is typically brought into the home because of the location. It enters through open windows and doors so it generally can't be completely eradicated. Some of the most common fungi found were Aspergillus, Penicillium, Alternaria and Fusarium, all of which are common mold-producing agents. While they are generally harmless, they can cause infections in people with weakened immune systems.

So, what are the most common bacteria found in the dust? The top two results were Staphylococcus and Streptococcus. Both of these bacteria are commonly associated with the human skin and are relatively prevalent in our everyday lives. However, under certain conditions, these bacteria can turn on their host and cause various health problems. Staphylococcus can actually lead to food poisoning, skin infections, and pneumonia, while Streptococcus can cause strep throat, scarlet fever, or impetigo.
